The correct term for our sense of the position and movement of individual body parts is proprioception. Proprioception is the body's ability to sense its position in space and the movement of its own parts, allowing for coordination and balance. This sensory information comes from proprioceptors located in muscles, tendons, and joints, which continuously provide feedback to the brain about the body's posture and movement without relying on visual input.

While kinesthesis is often mistakenly thought of as the same concept, it more specifically refers to the awareness of body movement and muscle activation rather than the overall awareness of body position. Kinesthesis is part of proprioception but does not encompass the full range of spatial awareness that proprioception does. Understanding these distinctions helps clarify why proprioception is the appropriate term in this context.
